The first year of law school is a defining year in the life of every attorney. BALSA prides itself in supporting our members, especially our 1L class. As an organization of diverse students, we recognize that everyone will have a different set of needs, and we work hard to ensure that the many domains of the student experience are covered. For BALSA members in the Class of 2021, this will include:
Mentorship: Before classes begin, we host a 1L Welcome Dinner that gives 1L students the opportunity to ask 2Ls and 3Ls important questions regarding how to succeed in law school. Shortly thereafter, each 1L is assigned a 2L and 3L mentor.
Academics: We open our Book Room to give students access to free textbooks and supplements. Our Academic Committee hosts workshops on outlining and exam prep.
Professional Development: Our Private and Public Interest Professional Committees host a Job Search Bootcamp. They also plan numerous events that allow our members to network with professionals in the public and private sectors.
Fellowship: Through events such as the annual weekend retreat, annual holiday dinner, the Black History Month Gala, and informal mixers, our members have a chance to hang out and connect!
We sincerely hope you will consider applying! If you are ever in the city and would like to attend an event, or even just connect with a BALSA member, please reach out! We’d love to have you.
